Apprenticeship Week - Now We're Cooking

10 March 2017 | Updated 01 January 1970

OCS took National Apprenticeship Week as an opportunity to announce that it is launching a new apprenticeship programme in the UK which will aim to recruit up to 900 apprentices in its first year.

From April 6, the scheme will offer apprenticeships in a range of operational FM, management and business support functions including ICT and HR.

Open to both new and existing OCS employees, the programme will offer vocational learning through local training providers and further education colleges and leadership development to degree level, providing multiple pathways for individuals to progress their career.

A series of roles across all service lines and functions will be advertised on the OCS website.

Stuart Rowberry, Resourcing and Development Business Partner, at OCS, who will be responsible for leading the scheme, said: "The forthcoming apprenticeship levy provides the opportunity for us to implement a development programme which delivers for our people, our customers and OCS. Apprenticeships will allow us to attract and retain the best talent through a focus on supporting their careers while equipping our workforce with the skills needed to best support our customers and the strategic growth of OCS in the coming years."

Perfect 10 for Bilfinger

During the tenth National Apprenticeship Week, Bilfinger Europa FM welcomed its 10th new apprentice to join the business in the past 12 months.

Clarisse James, 24 from Manchester, has been appointed as facilities manager apprentice to work on Bilfinger’s partnership with RSA Insurance Group - delivering services including maintenance, electrical works, cleaning, catering and security.

The previous nine apprentice have taken roles varying from IT, payroll and accounts, to electrical and mechanical engineering at sites right across the UK.  Clarisse said of her new role: “Previously I worked as a manager of a bar in Manchester, however I was looking for a change of role and after researching the industry on the BIFM website, a career in facilities management really appealed.

“I am obviously very new to the role and the industry, however so far I am absolutely loving it. I enjoy a lot of variety in my work and I’m a real people person, both of which play significant parts in my role as a facilities manager apprentice.“

Bilfinger Europa is presently advertising for two candidates to join its apprenticeship programme as mechanical engineers in Redhill and Guildford.

Calbarrie Apprenticeship Scheme

Calbarrie Compliance Services, national provider of electrical testing services, is supporting young adults into work through its apprenticeship scheme.

Calbarrie is employing young people in office roles at its head office in Cheltenham and in engineer roles across the country. Offered in partnership with local colleges, the apprenticeships are designed to give the young person real life work experience, as well as the chance to learn skills and gain a qualification to kick-start their career and lead to a permanent position within the company.

Drew Bartlett is seven months into his one year apprenticeship with Calbarrie’s Sales team in Cheltenham. He said: “Since starting with Calbarrie I’ve grown in confidence and developed my knowledge and general skills. I’m lucky enough to get involved in a wide range of activities and to try new challenges. The Apprenticeship Scheme gives me a training experience that will help me start a career which I am very thankful for.”

Calbarrie is also offering engineer apprenticeships from regional operations around the country, with the chance to train and work within the local community. Calbarrie engineer apprentices can gain career skills out in the field as well as study for a City & Guilds qualification.
