On the Wrong Type of List - Minimum Wage Shame for FM Duo

12 August 2016 | Updated 01 January 1970

The largest list of employers to be named and shamed for failing to pay their workers the National Minimum Wage has been published by the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy - and Mitie and Interserve both appear.

Between them, 197 companies owed £465,291, before they made-up the deficits, across a range of employers including football clubs, hotels, care homes and hairdressers. All of the money owed to these workers has been paid back to them. Since the scheme was introduced in October 2013, 687 employers have been named and shamed, with total arrears of more than £3.5 million.

Business Minister Margot James said: "This government is determined to build an economy that works for everyone, not just the privileged few. That means making sure everyone gets paid the wages they are owed – including our new, higher, National Living Wage. It is not acceptable that some employers fail to pay at least the minimum wage their workers are entitled to."

The naming and shaming scheme was revised in October 2013 to make it simpler to name and shame employers that do not comply with minimum wage rules. The 197 cases were thoroughly investigated by HM Revenue and Customs.

73 and 91 on the list

In fairness, the size of the list has meant that some minor offenders have been captured but it has to be remembered that to make-up the totals on relatively low amount also takes some doing. On the list at number 73 is Mitie Property Services (UK) Ltd, Bristol, owed £1,226.37 to 1 worker. And coming in at 91 is Interserve FS (UK) Ltd, Dudley, owed £894.03 to 4 workers.
