13:45 Wednesday & 10:15 Thursday - Powering your Datacentre with Renewable Energy. New opportunities for supply security.

Peter Stevenson, Senior Technical Coordinator, Yuasa Battery Europe Ltd. High profile companies such as Google, Apple and Microsoft have implemented 100% renewables power for many of their datacentres. A common commercial approach is via Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) with Renewable Generation (RG) companies. These long term deals can be used to finance new windfarms, PV arrays or other generating assets, often sited close to the datacentres. Where renewable energy is a relatively small percentage of a large and robust electricity network, the fluctuating nature of RG can be absorbed by normal control methods. As RG penetration increases it is recognised that new means will be needed to balance supply and demand profiles. New battery technologies may enable the recent collaboration between Datacentre operators and RG companies to develop further, via Demand Side Management Agreements. This activity can utilise existing power conversion facilities within Datacentres.
