Taking PriDE of Place

20 June 2014 | Updated 01 January 1970

As part of a major energy saving programme, Sabien’s M2G boiler load optimisation controls have been installed at 28 Ministry of Defence sites across South East England.

Sabien’s M2G units were selected by PriDE, the joint venture between Interserve Defence and SSE Contracting that manages the Defence Infrastructure Organisation’s (DIO) South East Regional Prime Contract.

Installation of over 840 M2Gs was one of a number of measures carried out by PriDE under a DIO initiative to invest £105 million to improve the efficiency of the Defence estate under the three year Energy Spend to Save programme. Other measures included upgrading or replacing building management systems and upgrading lighting.

Measurement & verification

Following installation of the M2G units, a measurement and verification exercise was carried out during October and November 2013 on selected sites, using methodology in line with the International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocol (IPMVP).

Sabien also worked closely with PriDE on the management of the project, addressing the challenges posed by a diverse estate with many different types of building and high levels of security. The boilers fitted with M2Gs were of varying ages and designs and included both oil- and gas-fired models. The project, including all installations, was completed in less than six months.

“To qualify for funding under the Spend to Save programme we proposed a portfolio of energy saving measures, which needed to deliver an overall payback within 1.8 years to help achieve the £70 million p.a. savings target.” explained PriDE’s Eunice Mabey. “We identified the M2G as a cost effective way to introduce more savings on boiler energy consumption over and above those achieved by upgrading the building management systems.”
