Essex based Billericay School has undergone a new multi-million pound expansion and has benefited from a number of efficiency saving installations including tapered flat roof insulation.

The expansion work was overseen by SDC Construction and included the refurbishment and extension of an existing three-storey building known as Block C, creating 14 new classrooms and science laboratories.

In addition to the work on Block C, a modern construction will accommodate the modern languages and music blocks, all designed by Sprunt Architects.

EcoTherm Insulation products were installed on the roofs using two different single ply build-ups, both designed and supplied by tapered insulation specialist, Building Innovation.

For the extension roof, Eco-Bond and Taper-Bond were installed beneath a fully adhered single-ply membrane. The products helped to ensure that the roof met the thermal requirements of current Building Regulations, achieving a ‘U’ value of 0.18W/m²K.

Building Innovation incorporated Taper-Bond within the roof to a design fall of 1:80. The tapered insulation product both insulates and creates falls for drainage, preventing the potential issue of ponding. To further reduce installation times, EcoTherm tapered insulation roof schemes are available with factory cut, pre-mitred hips and valleys, minimising on-site cutting and waste.

To insulate the new roof of the music block Voland Roofing fitted Eco-Fix as part of Building Innovation’s tapered ASPIRE - a hybrid system incorporating different insulation materials to achieve good performance. Eco-Fix’s PIR core faced with aluminium foil on both sides helped the roof build-up match the thermal performance of Block C.
