Two Charged with Terror Plans - One Accused of Planning UK Attacks

22 July 2015 | Updated 01 January 1970

As reported in ThisWeekinFM last week, officers from the Metropolitan Police Service’s Counter Terrorism Command (SO15) arrested three men on Tuesday afternoon (July 14) on suspicion of being involved in the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism. Two have now appeared in court.

The arrests took place in Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire. Two of the men from Luton in Bedfordshire have now been charged with offences under the Terrorism Act and have appeared in court.

Junead Ahmed Khan, 24 and Shazib Ahmed Khan, 22, both of Marlow Avenue, Luton were charged on Tuesday, July 21 with two counts of being involved in the preparation with the intention to commit acts of terrorism.

They appeared in custody at Westminster Magistrates' Court at 2:00pm on Tuesday and were remanded in custody to next appear at the Old Bailey on 10 August.

The details of the charges are as follows:

Count one: Junead Ahmed Khan and Shazib Ahmed Khan, between 1 August 2014 and 10 May 2015 with the intention of committing acts of terrorism engaged in conduct in preparation for giving effect to that intention contrary to section 5(1)(a) of the Terrorism Act 2006.

Count two: Junead Ahmed Khan between 10 May 2015 and 14 July 2015 with the intention of committing acts of terrorism engaged in conduct in preparation for giving effect to that intention contrary to section 5(1)(a) of the Terrorism Act 2006.

A third man, in his 30s, was also arrested and released without charge on Monday July 20.

Officers from the UK's national counter terrorism network, led by the Met's Counter Terrorism Command (SO15) and supported by colleagues from Bedfordshire Police and Eastern Counter Terrorism Intelligence Unit, carried out the operation.

The arrests are part of an ongoing investigation into Islamist-related terrorism. As this is an active investigation, no further information is available at this stage. However, the BBC has reported that Deborah Walsh, deputy head of counter-terrorism at the Crown Prosecution Service, said: "It is alleged that Junead Khan and Shazib Khan had been planning on travelling to Syria to join the proscribed organisation Islamic State in Levant (Isil).

"It is further alleged that Junead Khan was planning a terrorist attack on US military personnel in the UK and he has been charged with an additional terrorism offence to reflect this."
