The Crown Estate has published its 5th annual Offshore Wind Operational Report, with the latest data signalling a bright future for the sector.

The report, which was published earlier in June, demonstrates clear progress over the past year, with:

  • 1,463 offshore wind turbines operational on the UK seabed by the end of 2016.
  • A strong development pipeline for 2017, with a further 830 turbines under construction and a total of 7 new sites expected to reach first power - a level of development activity not seen since 2010.
  • Examples of significant investment in operations and maintenance bases across a number of the UK’s regional ports and harbours, bringing local investment and job creation.
  • Investment opportunities and risk profiles that are attracting a broader pool of investors to the sector, with pensions funds and corporates entering the market for the first time, including at the construction phase.

The report also includes contributions from: SPARTA, the G+ Health and Safety Consortium, and the Green Investment Bank.

Huub den Rooijen, Director of Energy, Minerals & Infrastructure at The Crown Estate said: “2016 has been another strong year for the UK offshore wind sector. It offers growing evidence of offshore wind’s competitiveness as a low-carbon energy resource.”
